“Leah, let’s leave.”

“You don’t care about the money.” Her forehead wrinkled like it used to just before an argument started. but something stopped her. Instead, she ran a finger over the nape of my neck and chewed on her lip.

“If it means that much, we can leave. We don’t really need the money,” She said at last. I hugged her again and she gaped for air.

“Have you been eating well?” She probed along the ridge of my chin to my lymph nodes. “You look whiter than usual.”

I couldn’t remember eating in the last few days but I didn’t feel hungry so I affirmed her statement. She ran her finger across my lips as I was talking and I playfully bit at it. Instead of nipping me back, she withdrew her hands and wrapped them around herself.

“Let me tell Christa we are leaving.”

Leah stood to leave and I gripped her sleeve tightly. I felt foolish doing this on my knees, but I pressed my forehead against her arm and begged her not to leave me alone, not to tell Christa that we were leaving. She yelped and pushed my head away from her. For a moment I didn’t know what to say as she looked on me with—maybe fear. Then she teased that my forehead felt like ice and she should go get Christa to call a nurse instead.

My body felt weak from all of the writing early in the day so it took a small feat of strength to jamb my body into the door frame before the door could click shut. I cried out to Leah but she waved me back and said we would go find medical help in the nearest town. My body felt weaker and weaker, like my legs were melting out from underneath me. Before collapsing, I stuck a screwdriver bit from my key chain into the lock. I returned to the coffin. After an hour of lying prostrate in the comfort of a dry, enclosed space I returned to the desk to record this.
