Transylvania Towers II

When my bit was done, each of the other characters stood up and proposed their own toasts. Jonathan and Mina were grateful for me taking them in and providing them the money necessary to get a fresh start in life, Arthur and the Lucys were grateful for a chance to take a lavish second-honeymoon in such a lovely and mysterious estate, Quincy just tipped his hat like a gentleman, Dr. Seward and Professor Van Helsing rambled on about the great power of the written word and their delight at exploring my vast and ancient libraries. It all seemed ludicrous to think that one man would need so many bodies to take care of his books. I wanted to blurt out that it was a trap, that I was only here for their blood. But it was another foolish idea, since they already knew what would happen if they had read ahead in the script.

One of the Lucy’s complained about the lack of Cherry Coke in the Recreation Room’s vending machine, while the other asked if anyone had bothered to exchange their dollars for fake Canadian ones. Van Helsing explained that Canada had banned one of Coke’s sweeteners and that every country had the right to use their own currency within their borders, but the Lucys became obstinate, what kind of tourist destination didn’t accept American dollars? Christa announced that dinner had finished before the mood could be tarnished.

I closed the first scene by kissing all of the ladies’ cheeks and shaking all of the gentlemen’s hands.

My scenes done, I pushed the writing table over into a corner by the black-curtained window and started writing on the back of this script.

It is far into the afternoon now, according to my watch. Somehow, I have lost several hours of time. I should sleep—but can’t bring myself to lie on those silk sheets. If I am to stay sharp, I’ll have to use the coffin.
