hahah BURNED. Oh the assumptions that we make. In fact this only makes the song doubly retarded because it's patronising suggesting that Ethiopians mightn't know that it's christmas and that somehow they wouldn't celebrate it because they are poor when for all we know they have a far more devout and active spiritual community than we do in the West.

I guess that's what comes of equating Christmas and snow.

I wasn't aware of the religious majority in Ethiopia. That's my fault. I did get insulted when my ignorance was brought up, and that's why I was nasty in my last post. I know that my knowledge is limited, and I did take a moral high ground myself so I can't possibly play victim. It's embarrassing to admit when you've screwed up, however it's better to admit then to pretend you're right all along.

Such spleen!

But, Numbles, although you may well have eventually learned that a lot of Ethiopians are Christian (and perhaps that some not only know when Christmas is but even celebrate it twice a year), I fear that you will never learn the nature of the real mistake you made, which was to assume that spitting cynical venom at parties unable to defend themselves without regard to some simple facts is acceptable just because it seems funny to you or because you think it makes you look clever.

It's a lesson worth learning, as it will help you to avoid looking like a... now what's the term I'm looking for?... a "stupid fuck"..?

On the other hand, it would deprive everyone of the fun of witnessing someone berating people for cultural insensitivity in a way that demonstrates (pricelessly) their own.

I'm just looking for a bit of peace and goodwill to all men, dude. Tis the season, and all that.

"No, Ethiopians don’t bloody know it’s Christmas cause they never heard of it," says Numbles.

It would be very strange had they not heard of it, seeing as Christianity has had a presence in Ethiopia pretty much since the beginning (the Ethiopian Orthodox Church remains the largest of the non-Chalcedonian Orthodox churches). African churches in general represent one of the world's fastest-growing Christian communities and, as recent debates about the status of homosexuality within the church have shown, an increasingly influential one.

Cynicism is an ugly thing at the best of times; it's insufferable when compounded by ignorance.

In your wisdom, you tried to protect us from the actual songs. But like a fool I looked them up on YouTube anyway. That Cliff Richard "song"...it hurts. It hurts.
